| Mizzou student military group donates proceeds from 5K race event to the American Red Cross Mid-Missouri Chapter (May 19, 2008) --- The MU Midshipman Battalion, a student group at the University of Missouri in Columbia, has donated $1,543 to the American Red Cross Mid-Missouri Chapter. The donation is the result of proceeds from the student group’s 3rd Annual “Mizzou 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run” that was held on May 3. The event is organized annually by the student military group, to specifically benefit the local Red Cross Chapter in Columbia. This year’s donation is more than double the donation made by the group in previous years. This increase, says Race Coordinator Anthony Deken, occurred despite less-than-optimal running weather. “The day of the race was pretty chilly, plus it was a very windy day,” said Deken. “However, we still had more than 90 registered runners, and gave out more than 20 awards in individual and team categories.” Deken said the route of the 5K race took a different direction this year. “Our 5K course went through a bigger portion of the MU campus this year, and we heard lots of positive comments from runners about that,” Deken added. “These students did a great job of organizing and implementing this event, and our Red Cross chapter certainly appreciates all of their extra efforts,” said Mike Odneal, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Mid-Missouri Chapter. “In this 3rd year of this event, it has continued to get better and better each year – and I know they have even bigger plans for next year’s event.” For more information about this student group and the results from this running event, visit www.mizzou5krun.com. The MU Midshipmen Battalion is a Mizzou student organization comprised of current and former members of various branches of the armed forces and is not affiliated with the United States Government. The American Red Cross helps people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Last year, almost a million volunteers and 35,000 employees helped victims of almost 75,000 disasters; taught lifesaving skills to millions; and helped U.S. service members separated from their families stay connected. Almost 4 million people gave blood through the Red Cross, the largest supplier of blood and blood products in the United States. The Red Cross is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, money, and blood to do its work. |
